This series will be part micro retreat, part hands-on creative workshop. In the first session, we'll reflect together on what your soul most needs, name big dreams together, and learn the logistics of putting together your own prayer journal in a way that encourages awe and gratitude. Everyone will have time to work on their journals during the sessions, and you may feel inspired to continue on your own time.

In our second workshop (which falls at the beginning of Advent), we'll look at the advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love, and their shadows, which are also important to our spiritual lives. We'll reflect on what's working in your prayer journal so far, what needs to be tweaked or added, and have time to communally share for more inspiration.

What you'll come away with:

  • A renewed spirit

  • A journal to companion you on your spiritual journey

  • A creative boost

Consider this an invitation to get out your art supplies or to rely on the many beautiful pre-made templates you'll be offered. We'll send a full supplies list upon registration, but please note you will be responsible for collecting/purchasing your own supplies, including a blank journal or custom bound pages, markers or colored pencils, printed templates, glue, and whatever flourishes you might like to add (collage, stickers, ribbon, washi tape - the options are endless).

We’ll provide:

  • 10+ beautiful premade templates that you can print and bind or paste into your journal, or use as inspiration for your own creation

  • a supplies list, sent 2+ weeks in advance

  • an encouraging space to try something new

  • suggestions of sections to include

Your Hosts:

Rev. Adelyn Tyler-Williams is a young queer femme priest. She currently serves St. Columba's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC as the Associate Rector for Worship and Discipleship. After realizing that many of the Christian journals and planners on the market didn't align with her spirituality, Adelyn started making her own resources! She believes that collage, bedazzling, painting, writing, using stickers and glitter glue, and truly anything that taps into creativity can be a means of prayer.

The Rev. Callie Swanlund is a priest serving in Philadelphia and helping others Find Their Spark. She is a retreat leader, spiritual companion/coach in the work of Dr. Brené Brown, author of From Weary to Wholehearted: A Restorative Resource for Overcoming Clergy Burnout, and creates virtual and traveling space for others to discover and use their creative gifts. Callie has learned that her brand of creativity is better suited for knitting and cooking—things that have instructions—rather than completely blank canvases!
